Contextual And Cultural Referencing In Art Design

This semester I take this subject. Subject that I take is a contextual and culture in art design. My title is are Zapin dance.Now,I will explain about zapin dance.

INTRODUCTION

Zapin is a dance from that is popular in Indonesia and Malaysia, especially in the states Johor. It is believed to have been introduced by Muslim missionaries from the Middle East in the 14^th century.

In the old days only males were allowed to perform it, but nowadays female dancers are included. It used to be performed exclusively for religious ceremonies but through the years it has become a form of traditional entertainment.The dance usually conscious movement groups and not by individual effort but perform in pairs and accompanied by are transitional music ensemble which normally consist of the gambus, accordion, rebab, marwas (bongos), rebana (drum), and dok. Viola does not belong as a music instrument Zapin but some consider one of the citizens. The is due to the music produced by a rebab has similarities to hurry up.There are various types of Zapin in Johor namely Zapin Melayu, Zapin Pekajang,Zapin Tenglu,Zapin Pulau,Zapin Parit Master,Zapin Lenga,Zapin Arab, and so on. These variants are caused by the districts and on how the dance is performed.According to the history of dance zapin, the first dance is a dance entertainment at the palace after taken from Hadramaut, Yemen by Arab traders in the early 16^th century. At that time the states of Johor to be the successor to the role Malacca as an international entrepot in the 16^th century.Zapin then spread to surrounding states such as Johor, Riau Province, the center of the old rule of Johor, Singapore, Sarawak territory and Brunei Darussalam.

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Zapin is one of the popular dance in Malaysia. Especially in Johor that are popular with zapin. Johor state intensify one zapin until it became one of Johor’s own identity. In Johor alone have been identified, there are 15 types of zapin originally from the area in Johor. Zapin also become a custom for people in Johor. Zapin one custom to welcome guest’s ceremony, Marriage ceremonies and formal occasion.

Music and rhythm

Each dance is assisted by beautiful music of which would need to be tailored to each step of the dance. Dialun music is certainly there should be a variety of instruments which traditional identities themselves to play songs Zapin.The rhythm of drums. Gadgets powered zapin maruas and dock. Rhythm in beautifying again with accordion and harp. For the original dance, host and dance about the pace dialun by beating tambourines and drums.Many people think that music zapin is music ghazal, but the fact is that the music is actually different zapin and ghazal.The impression should be corrected. Music zapin is actually derived from the Arabic and Ghazal music from Indian based instruments and musical elements in each song zapin and ghazal.

Clothing and fashion in Zapin.

Zapin dance performed by the villagers. Therefore clothes geared more towards Baju Kurung and baju malayu as wear a songkok and fabric commerce. Unlike other Malay dance such as Natural Dance,Host and Joget who actually pulled the cluster nobility or the palace. Thus,over the kebaya dress or Baju srikandi for female dancers and baju pahlawan for men.The clothing are influenced by the status or caste like the nobility of ordinary people. Just look at the old malay movie like movies P.Ramlee like Musang Berjanggut film,you certainly will be able to distinguish.
